Major Events of 1942

1942 (Roman Numerals: MCMXLII) was the 42nd year of the 20th century. 1942 was not a leap year, and the first day of the year was a Thursday.

World War II continued to rage in 1942. The war began to gradually turn in the Allies favor over the year. The Allies began to gain the upperhand in North Africa following victory in the Battle of El Alamein and the invasion of Northwest Africa (Operation Torch). In Russia, the German's were unsuccessful in an attempt to seize the country's southern oil fields, and a large pocket of German troops were surrounded at Stalingrad.

SS leader Heydrich holds Wannsee Conference to plan the "Final Solution" (Holocaust of Jews).

Japanese forces take Manila, Philippines.

General Douglas MacArthur leaves Philippines, arrives in Australia.

United States forces on Bataan peninsula surrender April 9th. "Bataan Death March"

Heydrich attacked and fatally wounded in Prague. Nazi's destroy town of Lidice in reprisal.

Battle of Stalingrad begins.

British Army led by Montgomery, defeat Rommel's German Afrika Corps at the Battle of El Alamein.

Allied invasion of Northwest Africa (Operation Torch)

Enrico Fermi sets up first atomic reactor at Chicago.
